Trial production of X80 PSL2 SAW pipe

was both a milestone in development of the mill’s capabilities and a statement about our intentions to support the oil& gas industry with products used in the critical services.

Steel of ArcelorMittal Bremen, Germany, origin was used to run trial production; it took about 3 weeks to get the steel delivered to the mill.

Requirements of gas pipeline Beineu- Bozoi-Shymkent were taken as production specification for 1020х15.5мм. Local specialists supported by foreign experts of the Company conducted the trial that included full program of testing required for PSL2, including:

  • Hydro testing ( with operating pressure 15,1 MРa)
  • UT of the weld, HAZ and pipe body
  • X-Ray
  • MPI of pipe ends

It should be noted that the pipe mill had to set a few records to produce pipe from such a strong steel grade:

  • pipe forming from steel coils of X80 strength
  • 3 wire welding for wall thickness of 15.5мм
  • create pressure more then 150bars to perform hydrotesting

100% of produced pipe passed inspection and ArcelorMittal Aktau became the first pipe-making facility of the former Soviet Union (except Russia and Ukraine) which was granted API certification as per 5L Х80 PSL2.
